For those that thought the Kindle 3 release was going to be November have come to release that what Amazon was probably planning on the Kindle for PC all along.
Yes, you no longer have to own a Kindle to read Kindle books if you own a PC (the Mac version is on its way soon).
You can download Kindle versions of books directly to your PC or laptop so that you can read it any time. You can get the free application here from Amazon: Kindle for PC App.
Of course there are both advantages and disadvantages of this.
One is that you don’t need the Kindle ebook reader to get your ebooks. Buying Kindle ebooks is cheaper than buying ‘real’ copies of your favourite novel, and will take up far less space.
So why would you need a Kindle now?
Well the truth is, it’s quite hard to read from a PC screen for long periods of time – I know that after a while even when reading news stories I get bored and skip to the next page, so reading a novel this way would be a challenge – at least for me.
You can’t snuggle up in bed with your PC – even a small netbook computer are too big to comfortable hold in your hand propped up on one pillow.
And of course, there is no way I’d be taking my PC anywhere near the beach. At least with the Kindle, you can get covers to protect it.
So overall while I think this is a great move for Amazon to get sell more Kindle versions of their books (after all they are just electronic versions and therefore it doesn’t cost Amazon any more whether they sell one or a thousand), I think I’ll be sticking with reading my books from my Kindle reader – it’s just a much more satisfying experience.
